The Organic Initiative Public Association, in partnership with the research agency MZ HUB, has conducted a study on the current status, plans, and needs of Ukrainian organic exporters.  The findings of this study were presented at the Сongress of the BIOFACH 2025 international exhibition on February 12 in Nuremberg, Germany.

📅 Study period: December 2024 – January 2025

📊 Methodology: 91 exporters (out of approximately 150 organic export companies) were surveyed online and via telephone.

Key Findings:

  • The market is growing! 54% of Ukrainian organic exporters plan to enter new markets.
  • Top 10 target markets for 2025: France, the USA, Switzerland, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Austria, and Israel.
  • This list is almost identical to the Top 10 export destinations in 2024, ranked based on survey responses: Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, Czech Republic, Austria, France, Switzerland, Belgium, and Moldova.
  • A conservative export strategy – 88% of exporters will continue exporting their existing products, and only 12% are preparing new product offerings.

Key Challenges:

  • 60% of exporters face logistical difficulties, especially at the Polish border.
  • 45% rely on just 2-3 markets, increasing business risks.
  • 29% report intensified competition in international markets.
  • 28% face stricter quality requirements.

Key conclusions on the next steps:

To facilitate the export of organic products, stakeholders and sector organizations should focus their efforts on supporting the following aspects of organic product exports:

  • Improving logistics – addressing border barriers and optimizing supply chains.
  • Supporting market expansion – market research, B2B matchmaking, and export development projects.
  • Export diversification – expanding beyond key EU and US markets, seeking new opportunities.

This research was conducted between December 2024 – January 2025 by the Organic Initiative Public Association (Ukraine) in partnership with research agency MZ HUB, with the support of Switzerland within the framework of the Swiss-Ukrainian Programme “Higher Value Added Trade from the Organic and Dairy Sector in Ukraine” (QFTP) implemented by the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL, Switzerland) in partnership with SAFOSO AG (Switzerland), and the Swiss Import Promotion Programme (SIPPO) implemented by Swisscontact.
